(Business in Cameroon) - Employees in the Ministry of Fisheries, Livestock and Animal Industries were surprised, on 7th July 2016, to be welcomed at the entrance of the building housing their offices by egg crates dropped by poultry farmers and members of the Citizen Association for the Defence of the Common Interest (Acdic).

In total, we learned, over 14,000 hatching eggs were thus destroyed in front the offices of this ministry, to denounce what the poultry farmers and Acdic refer to as “the destruction of the national poultry sector”, through the ban on the sale of chicken in some of the production areas among the most important in the country, after the discovery of a bird flu outbreak in May.

Indeed, for over a month now, the Cameroonian authorities banned the sale of chicken in the capital and two districts in the Western region, which represents 80% of the Cameroonian poultry production. According to poultry farmers, who estimate that the government managed this new bird flu epizooty in a “disastrous way”, the sector has already lost nearly FCfa 10 billion since the ban on the sale of chicken was enforced in some towns around the country.
