(Business in Cameroon) - In 2015, the Union Centrale des Coopératives Agricoles de l’Ouest (UCCAO - Central Union of Western Agricultural Cooperatives) set up a seedling field of 6 hectares in Bagang-Fondji. This field has coffee seedlings of the Java variety, with which UCCAO will experiment with the support of the Agricultural Research Institute for Development (IRAD, Institut de Recherche Agricole pour le Développement), we learned from reliable sources.
Java is a variety of Arabica, which gets its name from the Island of Java in Indonesia, where it is produced. The upcoming introduction of this variety to farms in Western Cameroon should primarily enable the increase in volume for the country's production of Arabica, which peaked at only slightly over 2,000 tons during the 2014-2015 season, against 21,846 tons for Robusta.
With the Java coffee, UCCAO will also be able to diversify its range of ground coffee, through which it won the "Gourmet d'or" during the international roasted coffees competition originally organised in June 2015 in Paris, the French capital.
