Cameroon: A National commission for the supervision of media activities

 The Minister of Communications, Issa Tchiroma, has set up a Commission to control air time allocated to each candidate for the October 9 presidential elections.

The role of this Commission is defined by the text signed by the Minister on 4 September. It is «mandated to prepare regulations relative to air time assigned to the different candidates and the technical arrangements for broadcasting news coverage of the election campaign in the public service media, the organization and management of government press relations and the facilitation of media coverage operations ».
However, the Presidential Decree issued on 13 February 1992 already organises the terms and conditions of political parties' access to government-owned audiovisual media services and the authority of the National Communication Council could be watered down by this new commission.
