(Business in Cameroon) - The management team of the Société nationale de transport d’électricité (Sonatrel - National Electricity Transport Company) is now complete, thus paving the way for the effective start date of this new operator in the electricity sector in Cameroon.
Indeed, after being established by presidential decree on 4 February 2016, the Board of Sonatrel, chaired by the Minister of Energy, Basile Atangana Kouna, held on 9 February its first meeting. On this occasion, Mbemi Nyankga, until then Prefect of the département of Mefou et Afamba, in the Central region, was appointed as Managing Director.
This public service administrator will be assisted by Ruben Minla’a Mengue, appointed as Deputy Managing Director. The two new managers, we learned, will officially take office on 11 February 2016.
Created by presidential decree on 8 October 2015, Sonatrel's main mission is to "the operation, maintenance and development of the public electricity transport network and its interconnections with other networks; the management of the flux of electrical energy transiting through the public transport network; the planning, undertaking of studies and infrastructure projects and electricity transport works, as well as searching for and managing the related funding; etc."
The priority now for this public company is to meet the challenge of rehabilitating most of the electricity transport network in Cameroon, now obsolete. This requires important investments, to which the World Bank is ready to contribute.
Indeed, addressing the press on 18 January 2016, the Minister of Economy, Louis Paul Motazé recently noted that the Cameroonian government had already received an agreement in principle from the World Bank, who is prepared to support the establishment of Sonatrel, with approximately FCfa 660 billion.
