(Business in Cameroon) - The Mekin hydroelectric dam, built in the South-Cameroon region, will not produce the expected 15 MW anytime soon to supply households in the eight municipalities in the Dja and Lobo districts in electricity.
In addition to the delays observed in the process to relocate the populations affected by the project, we learned during a recent ground visit by the local public authorities, environment issues are preventing the start of the turbines.
Indeed, we learned from reliable sources, recent tests made on this energy infrastructure led to at least two neighbouring bridges being flooded, thus revealing dysfunctions which will need to be remedied before the commissioning of the structure.
As a reminder, the Mekin dam was built by China National Electric Engineering Corporation (CNEEC), from a Chinese financing of approximately FCfa 25 billion in favour of the Cameroonian State. The project also includes the construction of a 33-km transport line.
