Rural electrification in Western Cameroon: the European Union allocates FCfa 1.7 billion

(Business in Cameroon) - The European Union (UE) delegation in Cameroon informs that it has allocated a total of FCfa 1.7 billion for the implementation of the “Rural electrification development, in the Hauts-Plateaux department” project.

According to the European institution, this project enabled since 2013 four boroughs in the Western region to get connected to the power grid. Thus, over 150 households were able to get access to electricity in the boroughs of Baham, Bamendjou, Bangou and Batié. Ultimately, 150,000 inhabitants will benefit from this initiative.

Out of a global financial setup estimated at FCfa 2.2 billion, the UE has taken the commitment of bringing 74% of the funds in said project through the “Energy Facility for ACP countries”, as part of the 10th European Development Fund (EDF). In Cameroon, the energy deficit is a serious preoccupation for the government and its partners. Indeed, 86% of the rural population of the country has no access to electricity.
