(Business in Cameroon) - The National Institute of Statistics (INS) just published a study on “Governance and Peace” which revealed that 44% of the Cameroonian population is critical of corruption, “which is a scourge hampering the good functioning of the institutions”.

Overall, INS indicated, 91% of the population declares that officers in the national police/gendarmerie or tax administration are involved in corruption practices. “It should however be noted to put it into perspective that this level of perception of corruption is at odds with the actual facts. During the twelve months preceding this survey, 17% of adults dealing with the administration (representing one customer out of five) were in effect victims of corruption acts committed by dishonest civil servants”, INS explains. Who also adds that, depending on the administrative body, the level of corruption based on personal experience is at 14.3% for people who dealt with the police/gendarmerie and 5.5% for those who were in contact with the tax administration.

Concerning the fight against corruption, 60% of the adult population declared being aware of the existence of an organisation fighting against corruption and 62% declared themselves informed of the efforts made by the public authorities. However, 69% expressed an unfavourable opinion on the efficiency of the government’s anti-corruption actions.
