Mineral resources with high potential
| Mines and Hydrocarbons |
The Cameroonian mineral resources abound in numerous mining deposit among which a relevant exploitation involving structuring projects, a major passage to become the "so hoped" emerging country.
By Achille Mbog Pibasso, DoualaVarious studies present the Cameroonian basement as one of the richest in the continent with numerous mining deposits. The exploitation of some of them and the current researches should strengthen the economic fabric of the country. Considering the bare deposits discovered or in the course of exploitation, the perspectives of development let foreshadow a promising future. The current geological knowledge reveals that six out of seven mineral deposits exceeded the stage of the research, as certain ores are already in an exploitation phase. It is about some iron, about some bauxite, some nickel, cobalt and of shines. In the Ministry of Industry, of mines and of technological development, one asserts that the government encourages the strategic partners possessing an experience to turn out to accompany these projects in order to bring out the other deposits of the stage of research to that of the project.

Corroborating studies
In his speech of the end of year in the Nation on December 31st, 2009, the Cameroonian Head of State Paul Biya who mentioned again these mining potentialities confirmed the implementation of certain projects. During 2010, he wanted to sound reassuring highlighting "the building work of the mine of cobalt, nickel, manganese at Nkamouna, the activities of exploitation of the diamond at Mobilong and the rehabilitation of the site of the ex--Cellucam for the starting up of the activities of the science park Edéatech. We are going to accelerate the process that must end in the exploitation of the bauxite of Minim-Martap-Ngaoundal and the iron at Mballam. As for the gold at Bétaré-Oya, its industrial exploitation has started in 2009 ".
A production of 2,5 million tons of bauxite would bring back 62,5 million dollars to the gross export.. If the same quantity was transformed on the spot into aluminum, the earnings would reach 1000 million dollars, that is to say sixteen times as high valuation.
A reading of the situation which confirms the corresponding studies stating an enormous potential. We can quote, among others, the oil the potentialities of which are estimated at 250 million barrels, the natural gas for 187 billions of m3, the bauxite for 1000 million tons, the iron for 1000 million tons, the cobalt / nickel / manganese for 225 million tons, it shines for 300 million tons and an important deposit of diamond of 736 million carats. The value accumulated by the resources above quoted would be superior to 100 billion dollars for more than 200 000 direct and indirect jobs.
Local processing
In order to strengthen these experiences, the Cameroonian Authorities bank on a more greater processing of raw materials and ores, a local transformation will be be likely to multiply tenfold the profits and to strengthen the development of the country. The massive export of raw ore is a factor to explain " the lack of creation of the added value through the spot processing of the extracted ores, the bad negotiation of the mining contracts, the lack of mining infrastructures following the example of laboratories, polls institutes, the lack of skilled personnel and the ignorance of the mining potential of countries by the investors " are so many problems to be resolved in order to move on.According to reliable studies of the Ministry of Industry, of Mines and technological development, a production of 2,5 million tons of bauxite would bring back 62,5 million dollars to the gross export.. If the same quantity was transformed on the spot into aluminum, the earnings would reach 1000 million dollars, that is to say sixteen times as high valuation (for the record, six tons of bauxite are needed to obtain one ton of aluminum).
A better leadership in the mining sector
Cameroon, which is signatory of certain international agreements in the sector, seems, for some time, to emphasize the transparency and the good leadership in this sector. This implies the implementation of measures based on "Extractive Industry Transparency International (EITI)", the insertion in the mining Code of non discriminatory measures of granting and management of the mining titles and the distribution of the incomes of the mining levy, as well as the effective application of the Kimberley process for the sale of mineral resources.
