(Business in Cameroon) - Determined to reduce tobacco-related damages to the Cameroonian population, Cameroon Coalition against Tobacco (C3T) finally made public, in a press release, its petition for the adoption of tobacco-free law by public authorities.
The press release entitled “A law which strongly prohibits Tobacco use” said that “each year, tobacco-smoking kills more than malaria, tuberculosis and HIV combined. Even though general belief tends to rank other diseases as more lethal, the fact remains that tobacco, is more of a silent killer (…) Despite the disinformation campaign and other obstacles, governments and parliaments must resist the tobacco industry, and adopt policies which would be accepted by the public”.
According to C3T, the anti-tobacco law should implement measures such as “the protection against exposure to second-hand smoke; prohibition of tobacco products advertisements, tobacco-related promotion, sponsoring or patronage; preventing youth from accessing tobacco products, increasing tobacco products prices…” Various measures, which according to the coalition, should lower the “alarming” statistics associated to tobacco-use in Cameroon, thus making the nation “healthier and more productive”.
