Cameroon: 10,000 people learn Chinese, which broadens employment opportunities

(Business in Cameroon) - The Conficius Institute and the other Chinese training centres in Cameroon are supervising approximately 10,000 persons these days, we officially learned. The rush to learn the Chinese language, according to the management of these learning centres, is explained by the availability of opportunities in terms of employability in the country.

Indeed, following the launch of infrastructure projects in Cameroon, most of which are undertaken by Chinese companies, several companies have established themselves in Cameroon and knowledge of the Chinese language is therefore an additional advantage to be recruited by these companies.

Moreover, many local economic operators see in the Chinese language an opportunity to strengthen their business relations with their Chinese partners. For traders who import goods from China, mastering the Chinese language generally enables them to successfully conduct business once in China.

As a reminder, over the 2000-2014 period, out of the FCfa 2,750 billion in foreign direct investments Cameroon attracted, according to the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD), China on its own accounted for 70% of this figure, thus becoming the top investor in the country, according to statistics from the Cameroonian Ministry of Economy.
