6,000 Km Fiber Optic Underneath Cameroon

(Business in Cameroon) - Cameroon has now a fiber optic network of 6,000 km. Jean-Pierre Biyiti bi Essam, Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Last Friday, officially received 3,200 km of fiber optic in Maroua from the Chinese partner, Huawei, adding to the already existing 3,800km.

Launched in December 22, 2009 at Kye-Ossi, South Region, the network will be extended to a length of 10,000 km, according to State Radio, CRTV.

Meanwhile suspenders are provided to connect the neighboring countries; Chad, Central African Republic and Nigeria.

Thanks to the ongoing work, the Cameroonian government aspires to raise the rate of Internet penetration to 40% that of the mobile phone to 50% and 30% for fixed telephony by 2015.

Estimated at FCFA 30.6 billion, Eximbank China contributed about 26 billion FCFA in a loan and Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) about FCFA 4.5 billion.
