(Business in Cameroon) - According the Elisabeth Medou Badang, MD of Orange Cameroun, this telecommunications company has already deployed the 4G technology over 250 locations throughout Cameroon, thus enabling users to access broadband internet.
In addition to this revelation made during a recent ceremony organised in Douala, the economic capital of the country, the manager of the Cameroonian subsidiary of the French telecoms group Orange indicated that 70% of the operator’s locations in the country are now 3G compatible.
As a reminder, the launch of the 3G and 4G technologies in Cameroon by the two main mobile operators (MTN and Orange) in activity in the country, respectively occurred in March and December 2015.
Since then, the roll-out of these technologies sped up to the point where, during 2016 only, the rate of internet penetration on the country increased by 16.5% in Cameroon, finally peaking at 18%, based the latest report from Internet Live Stats.
On 13 December 2016 in Yaoundé, the local branch of the Swedish telecoms firm Ericsson, then citing the June 2016 Ericsson Mobility Report and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), even claimed that the internet penetration rate in Cameroon had reached 25.6% in 2015 – against an African average of 20%, due to the rise of 3G and 4G.
