“(Business in Cameroon) - The arrival of large ships to Douala Port in the first quarter is an indicator that 2014 is promising for business,” stated Douala International Terminal (DIT) with delight in a press release. According to authorised sources, the container terminal dealer’s optimism is due to the reactivation of the No. 2 gantry crane at the port after a month of routine maintenance and the resumption of dredging work in the port’s channel which have finally been assigned to the China Harbour Engineering Corporation (CHEC) after the sudden departure of Belgian company,  Jan de Nul.

The two factors combined have re-opened Douala Port to large ships, increasing the the DIT’s shipping activity. The company emphasises in the above-mentioned press release that “the volume of import/export merchandise in the month of January 2014 broke records”, reaching “31 506 20-ft containers, is the second largest volume of containers handled in the history of the DIT.”

This performance is largely due to the technical condition of the two gantry cranes at Douala Port. Both had maintenance done in November 2013 and February 2014, increasing their speed “to an average of 23 movements per hour, which is far above last year’s (19 movement per hour on average before maintenance in 2013). According to the DIT, this has improved by 21%”. DIT has also announced the “delivery of new handling engines in May 2014 to reduce the average truck rotation time.”
