(Business in Cameroon) - Cocoa Farmers and buyers told Reuters that unrest in the English speaking part of Cameroon (South West) has been fueling the beans’ smuggling to Nigeria.
Indeed, since the confrontations between the separatists and the security forces started in this region, local buyers are afraid to go to the production basins which are actually located inside the conflict area.
As the English speaking part shares a border with Nigeria, buyers from this neighboring country come there daily and buy important volumes of cocoa from Cameroonian producers.
However, the producers explain that they are not displeased with that as Nigerians offer better prices than local buyers. According to local sources, Nigerian buyers pay CFA850-1000 for a kilogram of dried beans while Cameroonians pay CFA600.
