(Business in Cameroon) - The government of China committed 20 million Yuan (about CFA1.7 billion) to support the emergency humanitarian assistance plan for the Cameroonian North-West and South-West regions plagued by separatists’ violent protests. This announcement was made after Paul Biya met his counterpart Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the China-Africa cooperation forum (focac) which kicked off today September 3.
In succeeding to secure this financing, the Cameroonian President hit one of his visit’s targets. For the record, the Presidency of the Republic of Cameroon announced last August 29 that the “Chinese President Xi Jinping should announce China's support to the emergency humanitarian assistance plan decided by the (Cameroonian) Head of State, for people in the North-west and South-West regions who are victims of exactions from terrorists who turned into secessionists”.
Let’s note that under this humanitarian assistance plan initiated June 20, the government planned an estimated budget of CFA12.7 billion for 74,994 people over the 2018-2019 period. The plan also includes the 21,291 Cameroonian refugees in Nigeria as estimated by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
