Cameroon: The EU calls for the continuation of the national dialogue

(Business in Cameroon) - Last October 14, the European Union council adopted a dozen conclusions on Cameroon, which is experiencing a sociopolitical crisis, in the Anglophone regions, and a post-electoral crisis.

The union welcomed the stay of proceedings, before military courts, against Maurice Kamto and his followers who claimed that there were irregularities during the last presidential election, as well as those arrested in the framework of the sociopolitical crisis in the Anglophone regions.

It also called for the continuation of the national dialogue held from September 30 to October 4, 2019 in Yaoundé, in order to find solutions to the legitimate expectations of the population while reinforcing inclusiveness of all the concerned actors in the country or in the diaspora, be them women, the youth or the civil society.

The European Union explains that it is concerned and strongly condemns persisting violence, against civilians notably, and the level of insecurity in the Anglophone regions. " Numerous and serious human rights violations are still reported and predatory criminality has been developed," the council writes. The institution notes that the humanitarian crisis has worsened driving more people into exile.

To date, it indicates, there are close to 42,000 Cameroonian refugees in Nigeria and 530,000 internally displaced persons. The European Union reveals that in coordination with regional and international partners, it is supporting all the efforts, like Swiss authorities’ mediation, that could reinforce dialogue in Cameroon.
