(Business in Cameroon) - An increase in the internet penetration rate affects the GDP positively. This was revealed by Jean Jacques Massima Landji, the representative of Central African telecommunication union (Union Internationale des Télécommunications pour l’Afrique Centrale –UIT) during the sub-regional conference on digital economy held in Yaoundé from May 23 to 25.

When a country increase its internet penetration rate by 10%, even though it is not the 4G network, it adds 3 points to its GDP growth”, he commented.

He further revealed that even though direct jobs are not easily quantifiable in the ICT sector, the creation of startups positively impacts the employment rate. Examples indicated by the representative of UIT include Camtel, Orange, MTN and Viettel.
