(Business in Cameroon) - On May 18, 2018, Cameroon’s minister of economy Alamine Ousmane Mey received Elisabeth Huybens, Practice Manager for Social Development in the World Bank’s Europe and Central Asia (ECA) region,  Hans Peter Schadeck , ambassador of the European Union, and Allegra Maria Del Pilar Baiocchi, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system.

During the meeting held in Yaoundé, the parties exchanged on strategies to consolidate peace in the Northern and Eastern regions which are affected by the attacks of the Boko Haram sect as well as war in the Central Africa Republic. Indeed, according to the UNHCR, 350,000 refugees from the Central African republic and Nigeria are currently present in Cameroon. This year, about 10,000 new refugees have entered the country.

The minister indicated that this strategy will be officially revealed once the mutual liability framework has been adopted. He also explained that the government would welcome every communication published by the partners since it could sensitize international population and people who wish to offer support to the country better than the national statements could do.

Let’s note that the said strategy will be implemented from this year to 2022. Its aim is to support and consolidate people by accelerating the implementation of social and economic development actions which will have a direct impact on the  life of the populace, especially the young ones who are affected by the messages of the islamist sect Boko Haram.

These actions consist namely, providing access to economic opportunities and basic social services. It also includes an increase of the suppport to local development, an improvement of the quality and rapidity of  public contracts awarding, promotion of an environment conducive to the private sector’s development and revival of the cross border trade.
