(Business in Cameroon) - In 2017, the number of workers directly employed by e-communication operators reached 6,725. The regulatory authority ART said the figure is 6.29% higher than in 2016.

In the mobile and fixed-line telephony sector, State-owned Camtel is the largest employer with 3,271 workers, ahead of Viettel Cameroon (975 employees), MTN Cameroon (712 employees) and Orange Cameroon (599 employees). This makes a total of 5,557 jobs in this segment.

With regard to Internet providers, jobs reached 580 with Swedcom Ltd being the largest employer (192 employees), followed by Yoomee (134 employees), Creolink (93 employees) and Matrix (68 employees). Meanwhile, value-added service providers generated 588 jobs.

Despite losses caused by the shutdown of Northwave (Vodafone), ART reports, the license segment (1st category) is experiencing the strongest increase since its workforce grew by 13.28% in 2017.

The number of indirect jobs in the sector is estimated in 2017 at over 300,000. These primarily include the product distribution networks for various concession operators, all service providers and other installers under contract with the operators, in the context of providing the electronic communication service to the final consumer.
