(Business in Cameroon) - The operation to remove shipwrecks from the port of Douala, launched on 4 June 2018 has achieved first results. As of May 7, the Douala Port Authority (PAD) informs that 25 of the 80 wrecks identified have already been removed.

The operation is being carried out by the Italian company Bonifacio for a total of XAF4.7 billion. Work includes the recovery of the wrecks and their cutting, sorting of collected materials and the recovery of the scrap for resale.

The wreck removal operation not only frees up several wharves, but gradually changes the face of the port of Douala-Bonabéri,” said Cyrus Ngo'o, MD of PAD. According to him, the accumulation of shipwrecks for more than three decades has “affected 30% of port operations in terms of safety of navigation, reception capacity and implementation of various services.”
