Cameroon: Kribi deepwater port woos operators of the wood sector

(Business in Cameroon) - From April 19 to 20, 2018, the managers of Kribi deepwater port met with operators of the wood sector active in Cameroon. Through these meetings, the port’s officials want to position this port in a sector which has been providing more than 50% of the Cameroonian non-oil export revenues since 2011 (according to reports from the national port authority).

This port will then receive part of the traffic which usually goes to Douala port which used to handle all the wood operations from Cameroon, Gabon, and the Central African Republic.

According to Patrice Melom, director of Kribi port, it is quite normal to send part of Douala port’s traffic to Kribi port since this will help release the backlogs observed in the Cameroonian economic capital’s port.

For the record, the second phase of Kribi deepwater port’s construction will be launched soon. During this phase, a second terminal will be built and it will be two times larger than the first one (the container terminal which is the only terminal in operation for the time being). Let’s also remind that the authorities also aim to build an oil terminal and an ore terminal (to facilitate the export of mining products) inside the port.
