(Business in Cameroon) - Maroua, the regional capital of Extreme North, will be third Cameroonian city, after Yaoundé and Douala, to benefit from fibre-optics – the infrastructure that will improve telecommunications quality in this part of the country, announced the Ministry of Postal Services and Telecommunications.

Work to lay the 39.4 km of cables was launched on 15th July 2015 by the Postal Services and Telecommunications Minister, Jean Pierre Biyiti bi Essam, who indicated that calls for tenders for the urban sections of the seven other regional capitals in Cameroon were made on 10th June 2015. “The government’s road map foresees that these sections will be operational in the first quarter of 2016,” stated Minister Biyiti bi Essam.

Cameroon, which will soon be connected to fibre-optics via three submarine cables with the arrival of ACE, currently has a 6,000 km, and plans to reach 10,000 km in 2020, according to governmental forecasts.
