(Business in Cameroon) - In the margins of the 22nd session of the Interministerial Railway Infrastructure Committee (COMIFER) held on 7th August 2015 in Yaoundé, the Minister of Transportation, Robert Nkili, proceeded to provide railstation wardens with metal detectors. This material completes what is already in place in the framework of reinforcing security measures on Cameroon’s railways in a context of suicides perpetrated in Extreme-North by members of the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.
In order to prevent these terrorist acts which generally target heavily frequented areas such as train stations, Camrail, the Cameroonian rail company, in collaboration with armed forces, implemented a series of measures aiming to strengthen security across the railway network.
Besides the security measures, the last COMIFER meeting focused on the advancement of the project to renew 175 km of railway between Batschenga and Ka’a, as well as projects to acquire 3 trains, 5 autorail modules and 15 passenger cars in the framework of preparations for the Afrique des Nations Football Cup, that Cameroon will be hosting in 2016 and 2019.
