(Business in Cameroon) - On November 2, 2017, the African Intellectual Property Organizatin (OAPI) has launched in Yaoundé the second phase of its programme for Extending the Protection of Geographical Indications. At this occasion, 15 Cameroonian products were presented for labelling.
Indeed, Cameroon wants to bring to light the peculiarities of products like the Kilichi of Ngadouéré, the avocados of Mbouda, shallots from Lékié, pineapples from Bafia, leather from Maroua, white yams from Mbé, onions from Garoua, the stones of Pouma… This, after it successfully labeled Penja pepper and Oku honey during the 1st edition of the program.
“We are now aware that labeling contributes to the protection of traditional knowledge and know-how while at the same time generating consistent income for producers”, Denis Loukou Bohousou, managing director of OAPI, said to explain the program which is backed by the French Development Agency (AFD).
