(Business in Cameroon) - As part of the supply of energy to the deep water port of Kribi, concessionaire Eneo Cameroon announced that it will proceed with the connection and commissioning of a transformer station and dedicated line, on Sunday 09 April 2017.
“The operations will enable the connection between the port complex and the Southern interconnected network from which it will get its supply in energy from now on. During the works, the electricity service will be interrupted in the town of Kribi and its surroundings”, indicated Eneo. Who recommends to the population living in the Kribi area to activate alternate sources of energy if required, to unplug all sensitive devices and only plug them back 15 minutes after the actual resumption of the power service.
Connecting the Kribi port to the electricity network is a good sign for this infrastructure which has been waiting to be commissioned for two years. This past February, the French hydrographic vessel Laplace, a boat for scientific use, carried out a mission of fifteen days in Kribi to collect data for future access maps to the deep water port. Though the Cameroonian authorities have not released further information on the commissioning, the French diplomatic services reckon that the port should welcome its first vessels this year.
Built by the Chinese company CHEC, with funding from Eximbank China, the deep water port of Kribi has 650 m of docks, including 350 m for the container terminal and 265.5 m for the multi-purpose terminal. The two terminals have a respective capacity of 300,000 Twenty Equivalent Unit (TEU) per annum and 1.2 million tons per year. The second phase of construction of this infrastructure plans for the extension of the container terminal to 700 m of docks, bringing it to a total of 1,050 m, as well as the construction of an ore terminal and an oil terminal.
