Indomitable Lions of Cameroon win 2017 AfCON by beating Egypt

(Business in Cameroon) - The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon won their 5th title as champions of Africa, on 5 January in Libreville, by winning over the Pharaohs of Egypt, with a score of 2-1, in the Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON), in Gabon.

The game was far from easy for the Cameroonian selection. Indeed, as soon as the match started, the Egyptian team dominated the Lions by scoring a goal through Mohamed Elneny (22nd minute) but the Cameroonian manager, Hugo Broos proceeded with a winning coaching technique by bringing in two highly experimented players during the second half. This is how, at 58 minutes, Nicolas Nkoulou headed a cross by Captain Benjamin Moukandjo. And thus came the equaliser (1-1). Vincent Aboubakar scored the winning goal at 88 minutes in regulation time.

The Indomitable Lions thus become the new champions of football in Africa, after Côte d’Ivoire in 2015. After losing the finals in 1986 and 2008 against the Egyptians, they removed the curse. It is as champion that Cameroon will organise the 2019 edition of AfCON. The country of Roger Milla, African player of the century, is now the second-most titled nation after Egypt who has already won the trophy 7 times.
