(Business in Cameroon) - Prices of food items followed an upward trend throughout August this year in the Cameroonian economic capital -Douala, a report from the National Stats Agency (INS) revealed.

"Food inflation, both imported and local, increased compared to August 2021. Imported food inflation rose 13.8%, while local food inflation rose 14.4%," averaging 14% YoY, the document said, stressing that the situation in Douala was sustained by “oils and fats, whose prices rose by 38.9% YoY, followed by bread and cereals (+26.5% YoY) and meat (+15.9% YoY)”.

Overall, the inflation observed in the world is the consequence of the explosion of sea freight and raw material costs, due to the post-Covid-19 economic recovery and the war between Russia and Ukraine. This international situation has not only increased the cost of imported products, but has also led to additional production costs in local companies, and subsequently in final consumer prices.
