Fuel Scarcity Hits Yaounde, Douala

Partial fuel scarcity, notably the “Super” type has hit Yaounde and Douala, obliging car owners to criss-cross the towns in search of filling stations that have the precious gas.

Although no official reason has been given for the scarcity, sources say the problem might have been linked to poor distribution.

Meanwhile, at the National Corporation for Petroleum Depots (SCDP) that deals with storage, security and distribution, everything seems to have normalized. Although all attempts to get the Storage Manager comment on what the problem was; how the distribution is done and the short, medium and long-term strategies put in place to pre-empt future disruptions failed, sources however told us that all was well not only with supply but distribution as well.

Super Markets Clip Prices

In view of end-of-year festivities, some super markets in Cameroon’s political capital, Yaounde, are into promotional sales, downsizing prices of most of their products to empty old stocks.

Some super markets are clipping the prices from 18 to 45 % of the usual selling prices.

For instance, there are products initially sold at 64, 000 F which now sell at 35, 000 F. A refrigerator that hitherto sold at 275, 000 F is now sold at 190, 000 F.

Chicken Prices Affordable in Yaounde Markets

Reports from markets in Cameroon’s capital city, Yaounde, say chicken prices have dropped in the markets.

At Marché Mvog-Ada for instance, big-size chicken now sells at between 1, 600 CFA francs to 5, 000 CFA francs down from between 2,500 CFA francs to 7,000 CFA francs some weeks ago.

The drop is attributed to back-to-school as most people are still struggling to finish either with fees or get school materials for their children.

Road Fund Resources to Increase to FCFA 70 M

(Business in Cameroon) - Resources allocated for road construction in Cameroon that pass through the Road Fund may increase from FCFA 55 billion to FCFA 70 billion in the weeks ahead. CONAROUTE focal points have recommended that the amount be increased on a yearly basis to reach FCFA 110 billion, the objective set when the Road Fund was created.

After a conclave in Yaounde, the experts and focal points proposed mechanisms of reducing the cost per kilometer of tarred road in Cameroon from the current FCFA 205 million to the average cost of FCFA 100 million like in most African countries, the rapid takeoff of the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Bank, effective implementation of the programme-budget and effective involvement of the local population in road construction and maintenance.

The Permanent Secretary of the National Road Board, Moumbain Matapit Issofa said they recommended that government restores the image of the Road Fund and give it the necessary means to function properly. The recommendations have to be subsequently transmitted to the Prime Minister on ways of improving Cameroon’s road network.

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has agreed to disburse FCFA 15.811 billion for the embellishment of Yaounde town within the framework of a project, dubbed, (Pady 2). The Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi and the Resident Representative of the African Development Bank in Cameroon, Racine Kane signed the financing agreement in Yaounde on Wednesday September 11, 2013.

The overall cost of the project is evaluated at over FCFA 77.36 billion and other financiers include the French Development Agency and the World Fund For the Environment. Work is programmed to begin on January 1, 2014 and some 1.8 million Yaounde inhabitants, representing over 85 per cent of the city’s population, are expected to benefit directly from the project.

The project, reports say, will sub-contract with non-governmental organizations and some small and medium-size enterprises in the country to give Yaounde the necessary hygiene and sanitation needed of a country’s capital city. Its first phase gulped in over FCFA 19.22 billion and created over 755 direct and 1,075 indirect jobs.

Two interchanges to be built in Yaoundé

It is a traffic nightmare for Yaoundé residents to cross the “carrefour Trois statues” roundabout during rush hour. “The secret is to get out early in the morning. Otherwise, you will always be late because of traffic jam,” a taxi driver advised a worried passenger. The roundabout was redesigned a year ago. But so far, traffic is not always very fluid. The situation is similar to that of the Tropicana roundabout at the south entrance of the city.

The former Minister, Clobert Tchatat, said “Yaoundé will breathe better” and the “Cameroon will live better”. It was inspired by Paul Biya’s: “As long as Yaoundé breathes, Cameroon is alive”.
This is why government is planning to build two interchanges at these roundabouts in these areas. The Ministry of the Economy, Planning, and Regional Development declared that the feasibility studies of these projects are almost completed.

Some 41.7 billion CFA francs (€ 63 million) are needed for these projects and the Cameroon government is still looking for partners to fund the projects.
