(Business in Cameroon) - From 2011 to 2016, the price per kg of shrimps in Cameroon fell by 400% from CFA16,000 to CFA4,000, making the once-luxury product more available on the market and more affordable for consumers.

According to Dr. Taiga, the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, this significant decline is the result of government actions including a better control of the seafront as to prevent fraudulent fishing and export by foreigners.

Among measures to make shrimp more available on the local market, Dr. Taiga also listed the reduction of post-capture losses thanks to the construction of ice production units for conservation. As well, the fisheries development association (Midepecam) intends to complete the construction of another ice production unit in Idenau, South-West region, in order to develop a fishing center in Bakassi area, which is remarkably rich in fish resources.
